Ever heard “Big Al’s” lumberjack story?
Category: Investing Methods, Mentoring, Tips and Tricks
It goes something like this …
A greenhorn moved to the North Woods and got himself a brand new start as a lumberjack. His first day on the job, the supervisor walked by just as the greenhorn was huffing and puffing and viciously chopping away at his first tree, yet barely bruising the bark. The more experienced lumberjack suggested that he had better sharpen his ax if he wanted to get anywhere.
The greenhorn replied, “I haven’t got time … I’m too busy chopping down this tree”.
Eventually, the new lumberjack got totally frustrated, and in desperation visited the company store to see what they had that might help him. The storekeeper declined to sharpen his ax, instead selling him a brand new chain saw, and telling him, “this is the latest thing … it’s the *new* way to cut down trees”.
A few days later, the lumberjack came back to the store, looking sweaty, dirty, dissheveled, and depressed. His hands were covered with blisters.
He complained to the shopkeeper, “hey, you sold me this new chainsaw and promised me better results, but I still haven’t chopped down my first tree”
The shopkeeper took the chain saw, examined it, and could see no problems, so he yanked on the starter cord and the chain saw burst to life with a loud “vrooooooom” Shocked, the lumberjack exclaimed, “what’s all that noise?”
The moral of the story? If you want results, you’ve got to not only get the right tools, but you’ve got to learn how to use them.
